Overview

Portugal's Golden Visa gives investors and their families a residence permit in one of Europe's safest, most liveable countries, with visa-free travel across the Schengen Area. Since October 2023 the programme no longer accepts real estate; the main route today is a €500,000 subscription to regulated Portuguese investment funds.

The permit asks for very little time in the country, which suits families who want an EU base without relocating immediately. Portugal changed its nationality law in May 2026: most applicants now need 10 years of legal residence before applying for citizenship.

Things to know before you apply

  • —Real estate no longer qualifies (since October 2023).
  • —Citizenship now requires 10 years for most applicants and counts from the date the first permit is issued. Only citizenship applications already lodged by 18 May 2026 stay under the earlier 5-year rule; holding or applying for a Golden Visa before that date does not preserve it.
  • —Processing times depend on the immigration agency's backlog and can be long.
